Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas is an award-winning historical/science fiction novel, spanning across time from history to the future. We take key improv skills inspired from Cloud Atlas to build interconnected scenes in an epic story. Cloud Atlas is such a rich material that we split it into two parts: Playing with History and Playing with Genre.

In Playing With History, we build living, breathing environments from different historical eras both real or fictional. Egyptian pharaoh times? The Golden Age of Discovery? Human settlement on Mars? We will build inside-out from the group’s knowledge – everyone can tell us a little piece of history and create beautiful improv montages!

In Playing With Genre, we play with different tempo and moods. A Western shoot-out at the saloon? An apocalyptic science fiction in Shakespeare? A Japanese Anime series? We will visit a variety of genres and explore the little gears that make them what they are. We will shift between slow duos to fast group scenes and try out many gears.

Kaleidoscopes

Kaleidoscopes It’s the first stone of Rocca, the arrival of tomatoes, and the cries of rebellion. Explore past and future eras and civilizations that no history books nor science fiction movies had shown you. Inspired by David Mitchell’s critically acclaimed novel Cloud Atlas, Kaleidoscopes is an epic improvised play across time. We embark on a journey through time – and make you laugh and reflect along the way at human’s follies and victories.

BIO

Aree Witoelar is a Norwegian improv teacher and director from Indonesia. He is the artistic director of Oslo Impro Festival and founder of Impro Neuf International, Norway’s biggest improv community. His improv style has been mentioned as smart, versatile, mischievious and authentic to his cultural roots. Aree has taught at Impro Amsterdam, Improfestival Wurzburg, Improfestival Karlsruhe, Robin Hood, Sofia Improv Festival, Italy, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and more. His mission is to make improv a global artform for anyone from any culture.
